Saltwork at the Po Delta

LOCATION: Comacchio (Ferrara)

ROUTE: Orange

HISTORICAL COMMENTS ABOUT THE PLACE: The salt flats in Comacchio are a protected natural area of the Po Delta Park (Parco del Delta del Po). They were created at the time of Napoleon in order to produce salt, but this business has been abandoned for about 30 years. In the last few years they have been visitable only during certain times of the year and with specialized guides. The reason is that the salt flats are populated by numerous species of birds, some of which extremely rare.
