Historical comment about the place: The Town Hall construction was undertaken by order of King D. Miguel. At first it had many functions, housing the judicial and administrative courts, the Treasury Office and various compartments where subordinate officials were housed. In the basement there was the jail, the jailer's house, and the free room. The interior structure has already undergone several transformations. The external appearance, which features a National Coat of Arms, built by D. Miguel I in 1844, has remained virtually unchanged till these days.
