Historical comment about the place: At the beginning of its existence, Sukiennice (eng. „The Cloth Hall”) was formed by two rows of wooden market stalls with an alley betweem them. As the name of the building reminds, they were used to trade clothes. In 1257 it was decided to change them into the stone ones. Next, they were developed in the tradition of the Gothic style. In 1555 they burnt but as far back as 1556 – 1559 people proceeded to restore the cloth halls. They were beautifully rebuilt in the architecture style of the Renaissance. In 1875 – 1879 their appearance was changed once more and decorated with symbols of Polish towns.
What is interesting, during the German occupation in Poland the picture of Sukiennice building was used as a symbol on a 50 zł banknote.
Nowadays, you can still find there some market stalls but mainly with souvenirs. There is also the Gallery of Polish Paintings and Sculptures from the 19th century as well as the entrance to the Underground of the Main Square.
