  4. St. Mary's Basilica is the most important church of Krakow after the Wawel cathedral. St. Mary's Basilica was built at the end of the 13th century on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church. The new temple was consecrated around 1320. Over the next centuries, the church was rebuilt several times, both the body and the interior underwent changes. The years 1477–1489 brought the temple the main altar by Wit Stwosz, considered a sculptural masterpiece of late Gothic. In 1795 the church cemetery was closed. This is how St. Mary's Square was created. Some of the surviving epitaphs were moved to the walls of the temple.
