Historical comment about the place:
Clock on the tower of St. Mary's Church
It is very difficult to give the exact date of the clock. However, it can be assumed that it took
place before 1390. This is evidenced by the preserved books of Cracow bills from 1391
noting expenditure on the operation of the timer, while there are no records about expenditure
on its purchase and where it was placed. With almost certainty, the tower of St. Mary's
Church can be assumed as the place to install the clock, which at that time served as the city
watchtower. In 1524 a half-clock was installed on the town hall tower, indicating twice 12
hours starting from midnight. It was the time of King Casimir the Great and Cracow was
experiencing an incredible boom - as the second city in Central Europe after Prague
opens the University modelled on the academies of Bologna and Padua.
